The Vimy Ridge Dance Program is connected to three student performing companies which allow senior students the opportunity for more performance opportunities and extra invaluable training – The Junior Company, Edmonton Contemporary Dancers, and the Edmonton Festival Ballet.
The Junior Company is a performance group that is designed for some of our more senior students in levels 5 – 6 (at the Vimy Ridge Academy) who demonstrate exemplary performance skills as well as an outstanding attitude toward all of their classes. This group is open to students by audition only.
The goal is to provide these young dancers with additional performing opportunities and challenging class work. Dancers will learn a variety of choreography that will be performed at selected events throughout the year. In previous seasons, the dancers performed at the Stollery Hospital Foundation’s Snow Flake Gala, the Edmonton Festival Ballet’s ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas and its Gala, multiple dance competitions in Edmonton and area, the Edmonton Contemporary Dancers’ Essence of Dance, and travelled to a competition in Lloydminster, Alberta.
Edmonton Contemporary Dancers
Edmonton Contemporary Dancers was created in 1997 to provide extensive performing experience for dancers ages fourteen to twenty.
Under the Direction of Tina Covlin-Dewart, the group was chosen to represent Canada at the 1997 Youth World Showcase during the Jazz Dance World Congress in Weisbaden, Germany. ECD also performed in the prestigious Leo Choreography Award Competition. Edmonton Contemporary Dancers present numerous performances each year to introduce audiences to the vast scope of jazz and modern dance. Dancers from this company have gone on to Decidedly Jazz Dance Works, Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, and the School of the Toronto Dance Theatre. In previous seasons, the company has travelled to Los Angeles and New York where the dancers took classes at Alvin Ailey School, Steps, Broadway Dance Center and Limon School. In addition the dancers attended several dance performances on, and off, Broadway. These performances included Alvin Ailey II in the heart of Harlem, Mark Morris Dance Company in Brooklyn, Risa Steinberg in the Bowery, Contact at Lincoln Center, Ballet Tech in Soho, and Fosse with Ben Vereen in the heart of Broadway. Each show was unique and offered the ESB dancers a glimpse of what it takes to be a professional among the best in the world.
ECD is proud to mentor young choreographers each season and to offer its dancers performance experience in many contemporary styles. Learn more about the Edmonton Contemporary Dancers by visiting their website.
Edmonton Festival Ballet
EFB strives to provide the pre-professional dancer with the highest standard of performance training. We allow the dancer in training the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a professional ballet company with a positive and healthy environment while presenting quality productions for audiences.
Edmonton Festival Ballet, founded in 1981, is the classical performing company affiliated with the Edmonton School of Ballet. Senior students at the Advanced 1 and 2 levels (with apprentices at an Intermediate level) can increase their performing experience by auditioning to become members of this resident company (co-founded by Margaret Flynn). They typically receive an additional 3 hours of training/rehearsal time weekly, with occasional extra or extended rehearsals, and a variety of performance opportunities which benefit the senior dancer. The company performs a variety of dance forms including classical, contemporary, character, national, and modern. Company dancers are also given the opportunity to learn classical and contemporary repertoire.
We give young dancers from the age of 14 the training and performing experience they need to make the transition from amateur to professional status while raising community awareness of dance. We do this by hiring qualified and experienced instructors/choreographers, and by enabling the company to perform in communities and schools as well as participating in festivals, competitions and other special events.
